In Greece
mandatory conscription still exists. It takes advantage of the countries youth
as a cheap labor force in order to maintain the Greek Capitalist interests and
strengthen their place among the peripheral competition.
With the
outbreak of the capitalistic crisis came a never seen before attack to every
aspect of daily life. A fraction of this can be seen in the living conditions
of the conscripts who have to cope with already harsh conditions. Now the
army services denies them the needed clothing and food with poor families who's
sons have been enlisted growing in despair in a country where unemployment and
poverty are still rising.
In these
conditions the Network of Free Conscripts Spartacus pleads for the creation of
a movement both in and out the ranks of the army, for the free syndicalism and
organization of conscripts against any atrocity which wants them to be “disposable”,
cannon fodder and treats them as trash. To any one who sees in them an army of
butchers who impose their interests with war.
The
Greek state in
order to stop our winning efforts which are embraced from the people in and out
the army barracks is putting on trial a member of the Network. Our Network
member is been charged for slander after publishing the gruesome conditions of
an army camp at our Internet blog ( http://diktiospartakos.blogspot.gr/ ) . The publication was made after a
conscript wrote a letter to the Network describing the appalling conditions
they had to live with.
The army
camp's Brigadier has come forth as the prosecutor but this is just a fraction of an allegiance
of state services in order to cut us down and force us to stop our actions of
solidarity to the conscripts in general.
Greece
today is living a operation of censorship and prosecution of political beliefs
in full swing. Such is its presence that it resembles the times of the military
junta of 1967-1974.
We have done a lot and have
become a thorn in their side. Our collective action since 1992 has
highlightened many issues such as :
·
The major problem of conscript suicide in the Greek
Army
·
The publishing of conscript complaints concerning the
miserable living conditions and the bossy and authoritarian behavior of army
officers
·
Our involvement in the movement of the conscripts not
to allow the army to become a
suppression force against the rebellion of December 2008. When conscripts from
almost all the army camps of the country denied to be used as a police forced
against the rioters and protesters
·
The major problem of drug use in army camps
·
The blockade of Greece's war machine and it's rally of
armament programs
All the above seem to disturb
the ruling elite, those which crave an army aggressive, an army “armed and ready” against the outer and inner
enemy, a militarized society, a youth submissive to militarism, nationalism and
racism. All of those who are responsible for todays situation of unemployment,
suppression, of the IMF and EU memorandums, the crisis in whole, all of those
do not tolerate other voices, other types of action. We see that this
prosecution aims the enlisted youth alongside with the anti-capitalist left.
The prosecution
must and will fall !
We address to you,
to publish all this in your country, to sign the solidarity act we perform
through this bulletin which appeals to persons and collectives together. So
that the attack from the Greek state against the anti-war movement will stop and
the stale prosecution of our Network member will be withdrawn.
